Overview of Food Grade PP Sheet Roll
Food Grade PP (Polypropylene) Sheet Roll is widely used in thermoforming process, especially in food packaging field. Its main features are high safety, durability, recyclability, and compliance with strict food contact material standards. Since polypropylene itself has strong chemical corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, it is very popular in the food packaging industry.
Material Characteristics
Safety
Food Grade PP Sheet Roll complies with various food packaging related regulations, such as FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and European Food Contact Material Regulation (EU 10/2011), ensuring that contact with food is safe and will not have harmful effects on food.
Thermoforming Capability
Food Grade PP Sheet Roll has good operability in thermoforming process. Its excellent thermoforming performance allows it to be used to manufacture various complex packaging designs, such as lunch boxes, food trays, fruit and vegetable packaging boxes, etc.
Heat Resistance
Polypropylene has high thermal stability and will not soften or deform at normal temperatures. PP material has a high melting point (about 160-170°C), making it suitable for a variety of food packaging applications, especially in high-temperature cooking, microwave heating and other occasions.

Transparency and appearance
Food-grade PP sheets have good transparency, especially in thin thicknesses (such as 0.2-0.5mm), which can clearly display the product content. This is particularly important for food packaging and can enhance the display effect of goods.
Chemical resistance
Polypropylene has a strong tolerance to many chemicals such as acids, alkalis, oils and fats, making it excellent in food packaging, especially for greasy and acidic foods.
Advantages
Environmental protection
PP is a recyclable thermoplastic, so it has good environmental protection. Food-grade PP sheets can be recycled many times, which meets the requirements of modern society for environmentally friendly packaging materials.
Lightweight and strength
Polypropylene materials are very light and can effectively reduce transportation costs. At the same time, PP sheets have high impact strength to ensure that the packaging is not easily damaged during transportation.
Low cost
Compared with other food packaging materials (such as PET, PVC, etc.), PP has a lower production cost, which makes food-grade PP sheets an economical and practical choice.
Good processability
PP sheets can be processed by injection molding, thermoforming, stamping and other processing methods to meet the needs of different types of food packaging.

Features
Moisture resistance
Polypropylene material itself has a low water absorption rate, so it can maintain the stability of the packaging and avoid deformation or quality degradation of the packaging due to moisture or water penetration.
UV resistance
PP material itself has a certain UV resistance and can be used for a long time in outdoor environments without aging. However, in order to extend the service life, it is sometimes necessary to add anti-UV agents to PP sheets.
Antibacterial property
PP material has a smoother surface, which helps to reduce bacterial growth, so it is widely used in the food packaging industry. In recent years, PP sheets with antibacterial ingredients have also been developed to further enhance its protective effect in food packaging.

Application of food grade PP sheet roll
The main uses of food-grade PP sheet rolls include:
Food packaging boxes
Due to PP’s excellent chemical resistance and heat resistance, food-grade PP sheets are often used to make refrigerated, frozen and room temperature food packaging boxes, such as ready-to-eat boxes, cake boxes, fruit and vegetable boxes, etc.
Beverage cups and containers
PP sheets can also be used to produce disposable beverage cups and containers, suitable for packaging beverages such as coffee, juice, and carbonated beverages.
Takeaway boxes
Due to the high temperature and grease resistance of thermoformed PP sheets, they are often used in the production of takeaway food packaging boxes, which can effectively maintain the temperature and quality of food.
Microwave heating containers
Due to PP’s good high temperature resistance, it is often used to produce microwave heating containers, which are suitable for ready-to-eat food packaging.

Production process of PP sheet
The production process of food-grade PP sheet rolls mainly includes the following steps:
Polymerization reaction
First, the polymerization reaction of propylene monomer is carried out at high temperature by a catalyst to generate polypropylene raw materials.
Extrusion molding
The polypropylene raw material is formed into a thin sheet through a melt extrusion process, and then cooled and shaped into a sheet.
Thermoforming processing
The extruded polypropylene sheet can be processed into different shapes such as lunch boxes, trays, packaging boxes, etc. through thermoforming technology.
Post-processing
The processed food-grade PP sheet can be further surface treated, such as coating, printing, antibacterial treatment, etc., to meet the needs of different markets.

Learn more about PP
Source and development
Polypropylene (PP) is polymerized from propylene monomer refined from petroleum. PP was first invented by Italian chemist Eugene Giulio Camano (Giulio Natta) in the 1950s. Since then, PP has become one of the most widely used plastics in the world, especially in packaging, automobiles, home furnishings and medical devices.
With the continuous advancement of plastic processing technology, the use of polypropylene has continued to expand, and the standards and technologies of food-grade PP materials have also continued to improve. Especially in the food industry, the use of PP materials is increasingly combined with trends such as environmental protection, health, and innovation.
Chemical properties
Chemical stability
Polypropylene has good resistance to most chemical solvents (such as water, alcohol, ether, etc.), especially in acid and alkali solutions.
Insolubility
Polypropylene has good repellency to water and oil substances, and will not dissolve or penetrate due to contact with grease in food.
Oxidation resistance
PP has strong oxidation resistance under normal conditions and is not easily affected by oxygen in the air, so it can maintain long-term stability.
Physical properties
Density
PP has a density of about 0.90-0.91 g/cm³, which is lighter than other plastic materials, thus helping to reduce transportation costs.
Impact resistance
Although polypropylene is relatively light, its impact resistance and tear resistance are relatively good, making it suitable for the production of food packaging, especially to avoid packaging damage during transportation.
Tensile strength
Polypropylene has high tensile strength and can maintain its shape without deformation in various applications.
