Thermoforming Plastic Sheet FAQ
Practical answers to common questions about PET, PP, PS and HIPS thermoforming sheets — from material selection and specifications to forming, testing, samples and purchasing.
Understanding What DESU Manufactures
Start here if you are evaluating DESU as a thermoforming sheet supplier.
What plastic sheet rolls does DESU manufacture?
DESU manufactures thermoforming-grade plastic sheet and roll materials including PET, PP, PS and HIPS. We also supply selected functional and coated sheets for applications that require antistatic, conductive or other surface properties. Our focus is the sheet material that customers process on thermoforming equipment.
Are you a plastic sheet manufacturer or a finished packaging manufacturer?
DESU is a plastic sheet and roll manufacturer. We supply material to thermoforming factories, packaging converters and other manufacturers. We do not position ourselves as a supplier of finished trays, clamshells or other completed packaging products.
Do you sell PET resin, PP resin or plastic pellets?
Our main products are extruded plastic sheets and rolls for downstream thermoforming rather than resin or raw plastic pellets. If your purchasing requirement is for thermoforming sheet, tell us the material, thickness, width and final application so we can evaluate it.
Which types of customers do you normally supply?
Typical customers include thermoforming factories, packaging converters and manufacturers using formed plastic components or trays. Applications include food packaging, electronics, medical and technical packaging, consumer products and other thermoformed products.
Does DESU manufacture the sheet rolls in its own production facility?
Yes. Sheet extrusion, production control, inspection, winding and related manufacturing operations are carried out through DESU’s production system. You can see more of the manufacturing process on our Production Lines page .
Choosing the Right Sheet Material
Material selection should start from the forming process and final product rather than material name alone.
How do I choose between PET, PP and PS for thermoforming?
Start with the final application, required transparency, temperature exposure, stiffness, impact performance and forming conditions. PET is commonly selected when clarity and rigidity are important, PP when temperature or flexibility requirements are different, and PS/HIPS for applications where stiffness, forming behavior or cost structure makes it suitable.
When should I consider PP instead of PET?
PP may be more appropriate when the application needs different heat resistance, flexibility or chemical resistance than PET. The decision should also consider the thermoforming machine, mold, product depth and appearance requirements. We normally prefer to review the actual application instead of recommending PP based on one property alone.
When is HIPS more suitable than PET or PP?
HIPS can be useful when impact resistance, opacity, stiffness and reliable thermoforming behavior are important. It is frequently considered for electronics trays, technical packaging and other formed parts where high transparency is not required.
What is the difference between APET, RPET and PETG sheet?
APET is commonly used for clear thermoformed packaging. RPET contains recycled PET content and is selected when recycled material content is part of the project requirement. PETG has different forming behavior and is often considered for more demanding shapes or forming conditions. The right choice depends on the product and process.
Which material should I use for food thermoforming?
There is no single material for every food package. PET, PP and PS can serve different food-packaging applications depending on temperature, transparency, stiffness, barrier requirements and downstream processing. The product being packed and the destination-market requirements should be reviewed before confirming the material.
Can DESU recommend a material from my final application?
Yes. The most useful information includes the final thermoformed product, current material if available, sheet thickness, roll width, forming method, forming depth and any special requirements. Photos, drawings or an existing material specification can make the recommendation more accurate.
Matching the Sheet to Your Production
Thickness, width, color and functional requirements should be confirmed around the actual forming process.
Can sheet thickness be customized?
Yes. Thickness is selected according to the material, thermoforming process and final part. Instead of choosing thickness only from a catalog, we recommend providing your current specification or target product so the required thickness and tolerance can be evaluated together.
Can roll width be customized?
Roll width can be produced according to applicable production and order requirements. The correct width should match your thermoforming machine, feeding system and mold layout. Please provide the required width when requesting a quotation.
What colors can be produced?
Depending on the material and project, sheets may be supplied in transparent, natural, white, black or other specified colors. Color requirements should be confirmed together with the base material, thickness and intended use.
Can you match an existing sheet specification?
In many projects, yes. A current technical specification, sample, photo or information about the existing sheet can be used as a starting point. We will still review the application and forming conditions because two sheets with similar basic specifications may behave differently in production.
Can recycled content be customized?
Recycled-material options depend on the sheet structure, product requirement and applicable compliance needs. If recycled content is important for your project, specify the target material, application and documentation requirement when contacting us.
When Standard Sheet Is Not Enough
Functional surface requirements should be defined by the actual packaging and handling environment.
What is antistatic plastic sheet?
Antistatic sheet is designed to reduce static accumulation on the plastic surface. It is commonly considered for electronics, precision components and other applications where uncontrolled static electricity may create handling or contamination risks.
What is conductive plastic sheet?
Conductive sheet provides lower surface resistance than standard antistatic sheet and is used where stronger ESD control is required. Material selection should consider both the required resistance range and the downstream thermoforming process.
What surface resistance ranges are available?
Typical coated antistatic sheet can be supplied in the 10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq range, while conductive grades can be produced around 10⁴–10⁶ Ω/sq. The required range should be confirmed based on the application rather than selecting the lowest resistance automatically.
Can coated functional sheet still be thermoformed?
Yes, when the coating system and base sheet are selected for the intended process. Forming temperature, draw depth, stretching ratio and final surface requirements should be considered together. Trial forming is recommended for demanding products.
What functional surface treatments can DESU provide?
Available functional options depend on the base material and project. Antistatic and conductive coatings are important examples, while other surface treatments can be discussed according to the application’s forming and performance requirements. See our Coated Technology page for more information.
Questions That Usually Appear During Forming
Sheet performance and machine conditions should normally be evaluated together.
Can DESU sheet run on automatic thermoforming machines?
Our sheets are produced for downstream thermoforming applications, including automated production. Machine type, heating method, feeding configuration, sheet width, thickness and forming speed should still be considered when matching a material to a production line.
How should I choose the correct sheet thickness?
Final part depth, cavity geometry, wall-thickness requirement, material type and forming ratio all matter. Using a thicker sheet does not automatically solve every forming problem. If you already have a mold or existing product, providing the current thickness and formed-part information is the best starting point.
Can your sheet be used for deep-draw thermoforming?
It depends on the material, sheet structure, part geometry and forming conditions. Deep draws put more stress on material distribution, so heating profile, mold design, stretching ratio and sheet thickness must be considered together. Trial forming is recommended before mass production.
Why can PET turn white after thermoforming?
Whitening should not immediately be attributed to one cause. Material drying, heating conditions, crystallization, stretching, mold geometry and local stress can all contribute. We normally recommend checking the process conditions together with the sheet specification before deciding whether the material itself is the problem.
What can cause cracking in a thermoformed part?
Cracking may involve material choice, insufficient or uneven heating, excessive stretching, sharp mold corners, low local wall thickness or other forming conditions. The useful question is not only “is the sheet too brittle?” but where and when the crack appears during the process.
Why is wall thickness uneven after forming?
Uneven wall thickness is usually related to how the heated sheet stretches over the mold. Part depth, plug assistance, heating distribution, mold geometry, sheet temperature and starting thickness can all affect material distribution. The forming process should therefore be reviewed together with the sheet.
Selecting Sheet Around the Final Product
Application requirements are often more useful than simply asking for a material by name.
Which sheet is suitable for clear food packaging?
PET is commonly considered where clarity, stiffness and product visibility are important, but the final choice should also consider forming conditions, temperature requirements, sealing structure and applicable food-contact documentation.
Which material should I consider for higher-temperature applications?
PP is often evaluated for applications where higher service temperature or different thermal performance is required, but the exact choice depends on the product, forming process and temperature exposure. Material suitability should be confirmed using the real application conditions.
Which sheet is suitable for electronics trays?
PS/HIPS, PET and functional coated materials can all be considered depending on stiffness, dimensional requirements, transparency and ESD protection. Where static control is important, antistatic or conductive surface performance should be specified separately.
Can functional sheet be used for medical or precision packaging?
Functional sheets may be suitable for selected medical and precision applications when the required material, surface performance, cleanliness and documentation are properly defined. The application should be reviewed individually rather than assuming one functional grade is suitable for every medical use.
What information helps you recommend sheet for a new thermoformed product?
Useful information includes the final product, dimensions, forming depth, material currently being used, desired color or clarity, temperature requirements and any special properties. Drawings, photos, samples or existing sheet specifications can reduce unnecessary trial and error.
What Buyers Can Review Before Approval
Supplier qualification involves both management documentation and actual material inspection.
How do you control sheet thickness consistency?
Thickness consistency is managed through production control and inspection during sheet manufacturing. The required tolerance also depends on the product specification. For critical thermoforming applications, thickness should be evaluated together with forming stability and final-part requirements.
What inspections are carried out before shipment?
Inspection can include relevant dimensional, surface, winding and material-quality checks according to the product and order requirement. The purpose is not only to verify individual values but also to reduce variation that could affect downstream thermoforming.
Can you provide SGS material test reports?
DESU has SGS test documentation for different materials and product requirements. The relevant report depends on the material and the customer’s compliance need, so it is better to specify the material, application and required test when requesting documentation.
What certifications and compliance documents are available?
Available documentation includes management, food-safety, recycled-material and material-test documentation according to the applicable product and requirement. Current examples include ISO management-system certification, FSSC/HACCP, GRS and SGS material testing. See our Certifications page .
Can you provide COA or batch-related quality information?
Batch-related quality and production information can be discussed according to the material, order and customer QA requirement. If a specific COA format, inspection item or traceability document is required for supplier approval, please identify it before the order is confirmed.
Before You Request a Quotation
A few clear technical details make quotation and sample evaluation much faster.
Can I request samples for thermoforming trials?
Sample evaluation can be discussed before mass production, especially when the material, mold or forming conditions are new. Please provide the target material, thickness, width, application and trial purpose so the sample can be matched as closely as possible.
What information do you need for a quotation?
At minimum, provide the material, thickness, width, color or transparency requirement, estimated quantity and final application. If you have special surface, recycled-content, compliance or packaging requirements, include those as well. A current specification or sample can also help.
What is the MOQ?
MOQ can vary with the material, specification, color, structure and whether the product is a standard or customized grade. For this reason, we prefer to confirm MOQ after reviewing the actual sheet requirement rather than giving one number for every product.
What is the production lead time?
Lead time depends on the material, specification, order quantity, production schedule and whether custom preparation is required. It should be confirmed against the actual order rather than treated as one fixed lead time for all sheet products.
How are sheet rolls packed for export?
Packaging is selected to protect the roll during storage, handling and international transportation. The exact method depends on roll dimensions, material and shipment requirements. Special packing requirements should be discussed before order confirmation.
What shipping or trade terms can be discussed?
Shipping arrangements and trade terms can be discussed according to the destination, order and customer’s purchasing requirements. Please include the delivery country or port when requesting a quotation so the commercial terms can be confirmed accurately.
