Пса & Лист HIPS для лотков для рассады: выбор материала, толщина & Термоформование

Seedling trays need an economical sheet that forms consistently, carries growing media and withstands handling at the nursery. But the right PS or HIPS roll depends on much more than the tray’s overall dimensions. Cell depth, wall distribution, impact resistance and production requirements all affect which sheet specification makes sense.

01What Makes Seedling Trays Different?

Seedling trays look straightforward, but they put several demands on thermoforming sheet at the same time. A sheet must stretch into multiple cavities, retain sufficient material at the cell bottoms and produce a tray that can be handled after filling and watering.

For a sheet manufacturer, the important question is not simply whether PS can be thermoformed into a nursery tray. It is whether the selected grade and starting thickness can support the actual tray format at a commercially practical material cost.

Shallow or Standard Cells

Economy and stiffness

Where cavities are relatively shallow and handling is controlled, a rigid, economical PS sheet may be sufficient.

Deep Cells and Frequent Handling

Draw performance and toughness

Deeper cavities, flexing and impact during handling make HIPS a more useful starting point for evaluation.

Our starting point: Choose the sheet around the tray’s forming depth and intended handling, not just the nominal sheet thickness. Two trays with the same footprint can need different material specifications.

02PS or HIPS: Which Sheet Makes More Sense?

Both standard PS and high-impact polystyrene belong in the conversation. They are not, however, interchangeable grades. Standard PS is valued for rigidity and economy, while HIPS incorporates impact modification to improve toughness.

Фактор выбора Standard PS БЕДРА
Primary advantage Rigid, economical material route Better toughness and impact resistance
Typical fit Shallow trays and controlled handling Deep cells, flexing and demanding handling
Main concern Brittleness at thin sections and stressed areas Balancing impact strength with stiffness and cost
What to compare Cell-bottom integrity and edge cracking Draw distribution, rigidity and tray performance
Buying decision Best considered when toughness demands are modest Worth evaluating when breakage or handling loss matters

We would not automatically specify HIPS for every seedling tray. If a standard PS grade meets the forming and handling requirements, there is little reason to pay for a tougher grade unnecessarily. On the other hand, choosing the cheapest rigid sheet can become expensive if thin cell corners crack during handling.

03How Cell Depth Changes Sheet Thickness Requirements

The thickness that matters to tray performance is not just the gauge entering the forming machine. Material is redistributed as the sheet stretches into the cavities. Deep cells, steep walls and tight bottom corners can leave substantially thinner sections than the original sheet.

What a sheet supplier needs to know

  • Cell depth: deeper cavities generally require closer attention to material distribution.
  • Cell shape: narrow, steep or sharp-cornered cells can create localized thinning.
  • Cell count and layout: the overall forming pattern affects heating and sheet distribution.
  • Handling load: trays filled with wet growing media may require more stiffness than empty trays suggest.

Practical starting points for sheet gauge

The ranges below are preliminary discussion points, not fixed thickness rules. The required starting gauge depends on tray dimensions, material grade, forming equipment and the required performance of the finished tray.

Tray requirement Initial sheet consideration What to check in trials
Lightweight, shallow cells Evaluate thinner PS or HIPS gauges first Cell-bottom thickness, release and basic rigidity
Medium-depth nursery trays Balance gauge, stiffness and impact grade Wall thinning, edge support and filled handling
Deep-cell trays Consider greater starting gauge and suitable HIPS grades Deepest corners, drainage areas and consistent forming
Heavy-load or reusable trays Prioritize performance over minimum gauge Repeated carrying, stacking and impact resistance

DESU manufacturing range: Our seedling-tray PS sheet product range includes thicknesses from 0.20 to 2.00 mm. That is a supply range, not a claim that every gauge is suitable for every tray. Starting thickness should be confirmed against the customer’s tray drawing and forming trial.

04Sheet and Roll Specifications That Matter to Buyers

A successful sample does not necessarily guarantee smooth full-scale production. For continuous thermoforming, the roll specification and consistency between production batches matter almost as much as the chosen PS or HIPS grade.

Thickness consistency

Uneven gauge can affect heating, material distribution and the stiffness of formed tray sections. Agree on thickness tolerance as part of the supply specification.

Roll width and edge quality

Match sheet width to the forming layout and equipment. Clean, consistent edges help reduce feeding difficulties and unnecessary material waste.

Color and surface finish

Black, white and custom colors can be discussed. Color consistency, surface condition and sheet appearance should suit the customer’s process and application.

Winding and packaging

Confirm roll weight, core size, outer diameter and packing method before bulk production, especially for automated lines and export shipments.

Supply item DESU reference Buyer should confirm
Материал ПС/БЕДРА Grade and toughness requirement
Толщина 0.20–2.00 mm product range Target gauge and tolerance
Ширина Custom width by product and production arrangement Usable forming width and trimming allowance

05Wet Handling, Reuse and Outdoor Exposure

Seedling trays may be stored in a greenhouse, moved while filled with saturated growing media or used for more than one planting cycle. These are different service conditions, and they should not all lead to the same sheet recommendation.

Use condition What it means for sheet selection
Wet growing media Account for the weight of filled trays and their support points. Moisture itself is not the same as chemical damage to PS.
Frequent handling Consider HIPS toughness where lifting, drops or bending create damage risk.
Repeated use Evaluate impact resistance, stiffness retention and cleaning conditions rather than selecting solely by initial cost.
Outdoor storage Specify exposure duration, sunlight and temperature. Standard PS/HIPS should not automatically be treated as UV-resistant for long-term use.

Our practical recommendation is to tell the sheet supplier how the trays will actually be used. An inexpensive short-cycle nursery tray and a tray intended for repeated outdoor handling may require substantially different performance margins.

06When Tray Forming Problems May Point Back to the Sheet

Not every forming problem is caused by raw sheet quality. Tool geometry, heating and forming conditions also matter. Still, certain defects are worth discussing with the sheet supplier because grade choice and thickness consistency may contribute.

Common checks during a material trial

  • Thin cell bottoms: review starting gauge, draw depth and material distribution.
  • Cracking near drainage holes: examine local thickness, brittleness and punching conditions.
  • Excessive tray flexing: compare rigidity, sheet gauge and HIPS grade.
  • Inconsistent forming: review sheet thickness variation, heat response and batch consistency.
Inspection of thermoformed seedling tray cell walls and drainage openings
Finished-tray observations help define the right sheet adjustment.

A useful distinction: Increasing sheet thickness is not the first answer to every defect. If the issue is a localized draw or a forming-setting problem, a thicker roll alone may add material cost without solving the underlying cause.

07Why Sheet Consistency Matters for Repeat Orders

Seedling trays are often produced in large quantities, making small variations significant over time. A sheet that works well during sampling should retain its essential forming characteristics during repeat orders.

Consistent production batches

Thickness, color, winding and the agreed material grade should remain aligned with approved samples.

Specifications built around equipment

Matching width, roll size and packaging to the customer’s line reduces avoidable handling and setup problems.

DESU manufactures thermoforming PS and HIPS sheet rolls for converters and tray producers. Our role is to supply material specifications that can be repeated reliably, while working with customers to refine the grade and gauge selected for their forming process.

08Request PS or HIPS Sheet for Your Seedling Tray Project

You do not need a lengthy technical report to start a material discussion. A tray sample or drawing, together with a few production details, is usually enough to narrow down the first sheet options.

Useful information for a quotation

Discuss Your Sheet Requirements

09Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is HIPS always better than standard PS for seedling trays?

No. HIPS offers improved impact resistance, but standard PS may be sufficient for shallower trays with modest handling requirements. The most economical option is the grade that passes the required forming and use tests.

What thickness of PS sheet is suitable for seedling trays?

There is no single gauge for every tray. Cell depth, footprint, material grade and required rigidity affect the starting thickness. DESU offers PS sheet products across a 0.20–2.00 mm range, with the final specification selected for the project.

Can black HIPS sheet be supplied for nursery trays?

Yes. Black HIPS sheet can be discussed together with custom thickness and roll dimensions. Color, surface quality and material grade should be confirmed before production.

Can standard PS or HIPS sheet be used outdoors?

Outdoor suitability depends on the expected sunlight, temperature and exposure duration. Do not assume standard grades provide long-term UV resistance; discuss durability requirements with the supplier.

Can DESU match an existing seedling tray sheet roll?

We can review the current material, gauge, width, color and roll dimensions to discuss a suitable supply specification. A sample and production requirements help make the comparison more useful.
