A practical sheet selection guide for thermoforming manufacturers and packaging converters choosing APET, RPET or PP sheet rolls for cakes, pastries, cookies, desserts and other bakery and confectionery packaging.

ل clear bakery and confectionery packaging, APET is usually the first thermoforming sheet route to evaluate. RPET can be considered when recycled content is part of the packaging requirement while maintaining a PET-based solution. For applications involving higher temperature requirements or PP-based package systems, PP is generally the more relevant starting point.

Final sheet selection should also consider package geometry, starting gauge, required rigidity, product visibility, grease and moisture conditions, closure method, roll width and actual thermoforming performance.

01 Choose the Sheet Material From the Bakery Application

Bakery packaging covers very different products and package formats. A clear cake box, pastry clamshell, cookie tray and dessert container may all be thermoformed from sheet, but the required sheet specification can be different.

Start with product visibility, temperature conditions, package geometry, required rigidity and closure method. These factors normally provide a better starting point than selecting the material from the product name alone.

Packaging Requirement Material to Evaluate First Sheet Purchasing Consideration
Clear cake, pastry or dessert packaging قرد Clarity, stiffness, gauge, forming depth, surface appearance and closure geometry.
PET packaging with recycled-content requirement rpet Recycled-content requirement, appearance, forming performance, gauge and project specification.
Higher-temperature bakery or dessert application ص Actual filling or use temperature, rigidity, forming behavior and closure requirement.
High product-visibility packaging APET / RPET Sheet clarity, surface quality, appearance after forming and package geometry.
Deep cake dome or tall formed cover Material and gauge should be evaluated together Forming depth, wall distribution, corner geometry, rigidity and mold design.
Purchasing point: “Bakery packaging” is not enough to define the sheet. A shallow cookie tray and a tall clear cake dome place different demands on gauge, material distribution, rigidity and forming performance even when both use PET.

Material selection should start from the bakery package requirement rather than the product category alone.

02 Specify Starting Gauge From Package Geometry and Rigidity

The starting sheet gauge must provide enough material for the thermoforming process while allowing the finished package to achieve the required rigidity and shape.

Shallow pastry or confectionery trays normally distribute material differently from tall cake covers or deep dessert containers. As forming depth increases, wall distribution and local thinning become more important.

Typical Bakery Application 0.25–1.20 mm

هذا مفيد النطاق المرجعي للتطبيق, not DESU’s manufacturing thickness limit. Final starting gauge should be selected according to material, package dimensions, forming depth, required rigidity, wall distribution and thermoforming conditions.

Tall cake covers and deeper containers require more attention to material distribution than shallow trays.

Package Rigidity

The formed package must retain enough stiffness to protect the bakery product during handling and display.

Rim & Closure Geometry

Flanges, snap-fit edges and clamshell hinges must remain dimensionally stable after forming.

Starting gauge is not final wall thickness. During thermoforming, material moves into the mold and becomes distributed across the base, sidewalls, corners and cover. Gauge should therefore be evaluated together with the actual geometry rather than as an isolated number.

Package depth, geometry and required rigidity influence how the starting sheet gauge should be selected.

03 Match the Sheet to the Bakery Package Requirement

Bakery packaging often has to balance product presentation with practical handling. The sheet may need to provide clear product visibility, maintain the shape of a large cake cover, handle contact with oily or moist products, and work reliably with the intended closure.

For cakes, pastries and confectionery sold through visual display, sheet clarity and appearance after forming can be important purchasing requirements.

Describe whether the package will contact oily, moist, chilled or freshly prepared products so the sheet requirement can be discussed in the correct context.

Snap-fit lids, clamshells, separate bases and covers place different demands on rim definition, dimensional stability and formed-part rigidity.

Temperature Should Be Defined From the Real Application

“Bakery packaging” does not automatically mean one temperature condition. Some products are packed only after cooling, while other projects may involve warmer filling or different use conditions.

If temperature is relevant, provide the expected filling, storage and use conditions when discussing the sheet rather than relying on the product category alone.

Do not over-specify functionality without the application. Anti-fog, special surface requirements or other functions should be discussed when the actual package and storage conditions require them. They should not automatically be added to every bakery sheet specification.

Visibility, product condition and closure design should be considered together when defining bakery packaging sheet.

04 Turn the Selection Into a Production Roll Specification

Once the material and starting gauge are selected, the specification still needs to be converted into a roll that fits the customer’s thermoforming line and tooling.

APET / RPET / PP
Matched to tooling layout and machine feeding width
Clear / natural / colored as required
Package Type Tray / clamshell / cake box / dome / container
Snap-fit / hinged / separate base and lid / other

Roll Width Should Follow the Tooling Layout

Roll width affects machine feeding, cavity layout and material utilization. For existing production, provide the current roll width. For a new project, tooling layout and machine feeding width are useful references for defining the production roll.

Existing production? A current sheet specification, roll label or formed package sample is usually the fastest reference for discussing an alternative sheet supply.

05 Approve the Sheet on the Actual Packaging Tool

Final approval should be based on how the sheet performs after heating, forming, trimming and closing the package, not only on the incoming roll specification.

A forming trial is especially useful for a new mold, deeper package, material change, gauge reduction or new closure design.

STEP 01 Confirm Sheet

Material, gauge, width, appearance and package requirements.

STEP 02 Run the Tool

Process the sheet on the intended thermoforming machine and mold.

03 Inspect the Package

Check walls, corners, clarity, rigidity, rim and trim quality.

04 Check Closure

Confirm lid fit, hinge or snap-fit performance before regular supply.

  • Clarity and appearance after forming
  • Package rigidity and dimensional stability
  • Cake dome or cover shape retention
  • Rim and flange definition
  • Whitening or visible stress in deep areas
  • Trim and edge quality
  • Snap-fit, hinge or lid closure performance

The objective is to confirm that the selected sheet works reliably with the customer’s machine, mold, package geometry and closure design.

06 What to Send DESU for a Bakery Packaging Sheet RFQ

If the package is already in production, your current sheet specification is the fastest starting point. For a new project, send as much of the following information as you currently have.

Confectionery Thermoforming Sheet RFQ
طلب: cake box / pastry container / cookie tray / dessert container / clamshell / other
APET / RPET / PP / not decided
Appearance: clear / natural / colored
Package dimensions:
Maximum forming depth: ___ مم
Product: ___
Closure: snap-fit / hinged / separate lid / other
Special requirement: clarity / anti-fog / surface / other / none

Unknown values do not need to delay the discussion. A current roll label, package drawing, mold information or formed sample can often provide enough context to define a practical starting sheet specification.

07 FAQ — Buying Sheet for Bakery &

Which sheet material is commonly used for clear bakery packaging?

APET is a practical starting material for many clear cake, pastry, cookie and dessert packages where product visibility and formed-part rigidity are important. Final selection should still consider package depth, closure design and actual forming conditions.

When should RPET be considered?

RPET can be evaluated when recycled content is part of the project requirement and a PET-based thermoforming solution is suitable. The required recycled content, appearance and forming specification should be confirmed for the individual project.

When should PP be considered for bakery packaging?

PP is generally worth evaluating where the application has higher temperature requirements or where a PP-based package system is preferred. Provide the actual filling, storage and use conditions rather than relying only on the description “bakery packaging.”

What sheet thickness should I use for bakery packaging?

A practical application reference range is 0.25–1.20 mm, but this is not DESU’s manufacturing thickness limit or a universal recommendation. Starting gauge should be selected according to material, forming depth, package geometry, required rigidity and wall distribution.

Does a tall cake dome require thicker sheet?

It may require a different starting gauge, but thickness alone should not be used to solve the forming requirement. Dome height, geometry, corner radii, material distribution, tooling and forming conditions should be evaluated together.

Does every bakery package need anti-fog sheet?

No. Anti-fog should be specified when condensation conditions and the required product visibility make it necessary. The product, filling condition, storage temperature and package design should be considered before adding the requirement.

Does DESU manufacture finished cake boxes or bakery containers?

No. DESU manufactures thermoforming plastic sheet and sheet rolls supplied to packaging manufacturers and thermoforming converters that produce the finished bakery packaging.
