When customers ask us whether PETG or APET is better, my first reaction is usually: better for what kind of thermoformed part?

PETG and APET Are Both PET Sheets, but They Form Differently
APET is one of the most common clear sheet materials used for thermoformed packaging.
It offers:
- high transparency;
- good rigidity;
- good gloss;
- reliable forming performance;
- competitive cost for high-volume packaging.
PETG is glycol-modified PET.
Its biggest practical advantage is usually a wider thermoforming window. It is less prone to crystallization during heating and is often easier to form into deeper or more complicated shapes.
That does not mean PETG is automatically better.
In many packaging projects, APET already does everything the buyer needs at a lower material cost.
For Standard Packaging, I Usually Start with APET

If the customer is making clear food trays, clamshells, retail blister packs or similar packaging with moderate forming depth, APET is normally my first recommendation.
The reason is simple.
It already gives a good balance of:
- clarity;
- stiffness;
- thermoforming efficiency;
- material cost.
For large-volume thermoforming production, this balance matters more than having the widest possible processing window.
If APET forms the part cleanly and runs stably, there is usually no strong reason to move to PETG.
When PETG Starts to Make More Sense
PETG becomes more interesting when the package geometry is more demanding.
Typical examples include:
- deep-draw parts;
- complicated cavities;
- narrow corners;
- parts with uneven stretching;
- applications where APET tends to haze or whiten during forming;
- thicker thermoformed components.
Petg is generally more forgiving during heating and forming.

For difficult molds, that can save production time and reduce trial-and-error.
But I would still check the mold and machine settings before assuming the material is the problem.
Sometimes a customer thinks they need PETG when the real issue is:
- poor heater balance;
- excessive draw ratio;
- sharp corner design;
- insufficient plug assist;
- unstable sheet temperature.
As a sheet manufacturer, we see this quite often.
Changing material can help, but it should not be used to hide a thermoforming process problem.

This is the comparison I think most buyers actually need.
The main difference is not “which material is more advanced.”
It is how much forming flexibility you need and whether that extra flexibility justifies the cost.
Clarity Is Usually Not the Deciding Factor
Both APET and PETG can provide excellent transparency.
For standard clear packaging, APET already performs very well.
So if a customer tells me:
“We want PETG because we need a very clear package.”
I would normally ask whether clarity is really the problem.
Sheet extrusion quality, surface handling and thickness consistency can affect appearance just as much as the polymer type.
A stable APET sheet can look better than poorly controlled PETG sheet.
From our production side, consistent haze and surface quality across the roll are more important than simply saying one material is theoretically clearer.
Forming Behavior Is the Real Difference
This is where PETG has a stronger advantage.
APET needs controlled heating.
If it is overheated or kept too long in an unsuitable temperature range, crystallization can occur and the sheet may become hazy or white.
PETG is generally more tolerant.
That makes it useful when:
- the mold is deep;
- heating is harder to control;
- the part has complex geometry;
- the forming process needs a wider operating window.
For a simple tray, this advantage may not be worth paying for.
For a difficult technical part, it may be very valuable.
APET Often Gives Better Rigidity for Packaging
PETG is easier to form, but APET usually offers good rigidity.
For packaging buyers, this matters because stiffness affects:
- stacking;
- handling;
- deformation;
- wall thickness;
- overall package feel.
If a softer material requires a thicker sheet to achieve the same stiffness, the material cost difference can become even larger.
This is one reason why APET remains widely used in high-volume thermoformed packaging.
It is not only cheaper.
It is often commercially efficient.
Can APET Replace PETG to Reduce Cost?
Sometimes, yes.
We occasionally see projects where PETG was selected at the beginning simply because it was easier during initial mold trials.
Later, once production is stable, the buyer asks whether APET can reduce cost.
That is worth testing.
Before changing, I would check:
- forming stability;
- wall thinning;
- clarity after forming;
- stress or cracking;
- final rigidity;
- scrap rate.
If APET runs well, the cost saving can be meaningful.
If switching to APET increases scrap or slows the production line, then the cheaper sheet may not actually reduce total cost.
Can PETG Directly Replace APET?
Usually not without a trial.
Even if thickness and width stay the same, thermoforming behavior changes.
The customer may need to adjust:
- heater settings;
- forming temperature;
- heating time;
- cooling time;
- vacuum timing.
This is why we never treat PETG and APET as simple drop-in replacements.
The sheet should be tested on the actual thermoforming line.
What Information Should You Send to a Sheet Manufacturer?
If you are deciding between PETG and APET, do not only send:
PET sheet, 0.5 mm × 700 mm.
That tells us the size, but not whether the material fits your part.
For a useful recommendation, send:
- final application;
- sheet thickness;
- roll width;
- package drawing;
- forming depth;
- transparency requirement;
- rigidity requirement;
- current material;
- current forming problem;
- thermoforming machine type.
A drawing or photo is often more useful than a long technical description.

Which One Would I Choose?
For most standard clear packaging:
I would start with APET.
It is clear, rigid, cost-effective and already proven in large-volume thermoforming.

Its wider forming window can make production easier and more stable.
My view after years in plastic sheet production is straightforward:
Do not pay for PETG unless its forming advantage solves a real problem.
And do not force APET into a part that is clearly beyond its comfortable forming window just to save material cost.
The right sheet should reduce your total production problem, not simply look cheaper on the quotation.
