Thermoforming Application | Medical Device Packaging

PETG GAG & PET Sheet for Medical Blister Packaging: Material, Thickness & อุปทานม้วน

Medical device blisters require more than a clear thermoforming sheet. The material has to form consistently, provide suitable protection and meet the packaging converter’s approved specification. PETG is often the first material we discuss for transparent medical device trays, with APET and GAG worth considering for particular processing or cost requirements. The purchasing decision should begin with the application, not a generic claim that a plastic is medical grade.

01 Sheet Requirements for Medical Device Blister Packaging

A protective blister for a diagnostic component and a deep tray for surgical instruments do not place the same demands on the sheet. The device’s shape, weight and sensitivity influence the required rigidity, cavity depth and material behavior.

Our role is to supply a consistent thermoforming sheet roll. The converter then uses its approved forming and packaging process to produce the required medical packaging component.

แอปพลิเคชัน Primary Requirement ลำดับความสำคัญของแผ่นงาน
Clear device blister Visibility and protection Clarity, rigidity and surface quality
Instrument tray Defined cavities and product support Formability, toughness and wall distribution
Diagnostic component pack Consistent dimensions and clean appearance Gauge tolerance and batch consistency
Sterile barrier tray application Compatibility with the specified packaging system Approved material, sealing surface and documentation
Transparent PETG thermoforming sheet roll with clear medical device blister trays

Our view: A successful medical packaging project starts with a defined material specification. Clear appearance alone does not establish suitability for a particular device or sterile packaging system.

02 PETG, APET and GAG Sheet Selection

PETG is widely considered for transparent medical device blisters because it combines clarity, toughness and useful thermoforming characteristics. For deeper cavities or detailed instrument trays, these properties can make it a sensible starting point.

APET may be a more economical route for certain less demanding applications. GAG, with its layered polyester structure, offers another option where the converter wants a different balance of forming and converting properties.

วัสดุ When to Consider It Purchasing Check
PETG Clear device blisters and trays requiring useful toughness and detailed forming. Grade, clarity, draw depth, toughness and required documentation.
APET Selected transparent blisters with manageable forming demands. Cost, forming response, trim quality and application suitability.
GAG Applications where a layered PET structure offers a useful processing advantage. Layer specification, forming behavior and sealing compatibility.
PP Selected medical trays with different temperature or chemical-resistance requirements. PP grade, dimensional behavior and application-specific validation.

When Standard APET May Be Enough

We would not automatically quote PETG for every clear medical blister. If an approved APET grade already meets the forming, protection and documentation requirements, it may offer a practical purchasing advantage.

The opposite is also true. A lower sheet price is not a saving if the converter loses yield through cracking, poor cavity definition or inconsistent forming. Material cost should be judged against the actual production result.

03 Sheet Thickness and Cavity Forming

Medical blisters may contain delicate components, long instruments or several items arranged in separate cavities. Their forming requirements differ considerably, so a single recommended thickness range would be misleading.

Starting sheet gauge must account for the material remaining after forming. Deep cavities and narrow corners can create local thinning, even when the incoming roll meets its specified thickness tolerance.

Forming Requirement Sheet Consideration
Shallow device blister Economical starting gauge, clarity and adequate formed stiffness.
Deep instrument cavity Grade toughness, wall distribution and local thinning.
Multiple detailed cavities Forming consistency and accurate material distribution.
Wide sealing flange Flatness, dimensional stability and the approved sealing system.
PETG medical blister tray showing deep forming cavities and sheet thickness distribution
Cavity geometry influences wall thickness and the performance of the selected PETG sheet.

DESU offers medical packaging PETG product specifications within a 0.18–1.80 mm thickness range. The appropriate starting gauge still depends on the device, packaging geometry and approved performance criteria.

04 Sealing and Sterilization Requirements Affect Sheet Selection

Medical blister buyers sometimes ask whether a PETG sheet is suitable for a particular sterilization method. That question cannot be answered from the polymer name alone.

The grade, process conditions and complete packaging construction all matter. Where the blister forms part of a sterile barrier system, the packaging manufacturer must establish compatibility and validate the finished system.

ความต้องการ What the Sheet Buyer Should Specify
การทำหมัน Intended method and conditions, such as EtO or irradiation, for grade-specific review.
Heat sealing Lidding material, seal coating and required sheet surface.
Mechanical protection Device weight, sharp features and required tray rigidity.
Qualification documents Required material data, lot identification and available supporting records.
An important distinction: A thermoformable medical packaging sheet is not automatically an approved sterile barrier material. Sealing performance and sterilization suitability must be demonstrated for the intended packaging system.

05 Sheet Quality and Batch Consistency

Medical packaging converters generally have less room for unexplained material changes once a specification has been qualified.

A roll that passes an initial forming trial is a starting point. Repeat orders must maintain the agreed grade, gauge, appearance and supply conditions. Changes in additives or formulation may also require customer review.

Production Observation Relevant Sheet Check
Cracking or whitening Grade, toughness and forming response
Uneven cavity walls Gauge consistency and material distribution
Visible surface defects Sheet cleanliness, marks and handling
Variation between deliveries Approved specification and batch records
PETG medical packaging sheet inspection showing transparent blister surface and formed edges
Surface appearance, formed cavity definition and dimensional consistency are useful sheet qualification checkpoints.

For repeat orders, an approved reference sheet and clear written specifications are more useful than vague descriptions such as “high quality medical PET.” Any documentation or traceability requirements should be agreed before production.

06 Custom PETG Sheet Rolls for Medical Packaging Converters

DESU manufactures thermoforming sheet rolls, not finished medical blisters. Our contribution is to supply the specified material in dimensions and quantities suited to the customer’s production line.

A PETG grade may form well, but a poorly matched roll width or winding format can still interrupt production. These details belong in the quotation from the beginning.

ข้อมูลจำเพาะ Buyer Information
วัสดุ PETG, APET, GAG or specified alternative
ความหนา Nominal gauge and tolerance
ความกว้าง Machine web width and trimming allowance
รูปร่าง Clear, blue or specified color and surface
Roll format Core diameter, roll weight, OD and winding
Qualification Approved sample, required documents and lot records

Our existing PETG medical packaging product range lists widths of 300–1400 mm, subject to the selected grade and production arrangement. Custom color and roll configurations can be discussed during quotation.

For an established medical packaging project, send the current approved sheet specification first. It is a more reliable starting point than replacing the material with a different grade based only on price.

08 คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Why is PETG used for medical blister packaging?

PETG offers useful clarity, toughness and thermoforming performance for many rigid medical device blisters. The specific grade must meet the intended packaging requirements.

Can APET replace PETG in medical blisters?

It can be considered for selected applications. Forming depth, toughness, sealing requirements and the customer’s material approval determine suitability.
