01 PET Sheet for Clear Salad Packaging

Clear salad trays, bowls and lids are established applications for PET thermoforming sheet. Transparency is important, but the sheet also needs adequate stiffness and predictable forming performance.

A shallow tray generally places less demand on material distribution than a deeper bowl. For sheet selection, cavity dimensions and forming depth are more useful than the container’s nominal capacity alone.

02 APET vs RPET: Choosing the Right Sheet

APET is our first recommendation for standard clear salad packaging. It offers good clarity and stiffness, with familiar processing behavior for many thermoforming converters.

RPET becomes relevant when recycled content is part of the purchasing specification. The recycled percentage matters, but it should not be considered separately from appearance and forming performance.

Our Recommendation for RPET Purchasing

We would not sacrifice clarity or stable forming simply to specify a higher recycled percentage. For transparent salad packaging, buyers need an achievable balance between recycled content, appearance and cost.

If an existing APET sheet already performs reliably and there is no recycled-content requirement, changing grades may offer little practical advantage.

For food-contact applications, both APET and RPET must be selected with documentation appropriate to the destination market and intended use.

03 PET Sheet Thickness and Forming Performance

Thickness directly affects material consumption and stiffness. A shallow salad tray may use a lighter gauge, while deeper containers place greater demands on the sheet as it stretches into the formed shape.

*These ranges are starting references for material discussions. The approved gauge depends on package dimensions, sheet grade and production conditions.

A thicker roll is not automatically the better purchase. It increases material cost and may still leave uneven wall distribution unresolved. For established production, the current successful gauge is a useful starting reference.

04 Anti-Fog PET and Surface Requirements

Anti-fog PET is a functional material choice, not a standard requirement for every refrigerated salad container. Its value depends on whether condensation actually interferes with product visibility.

Why Flat-Sheet Clarity Is Not Enough

A clear PET sheet can pass an ordinary appearance check at room temperature yet produce a foggy-looking container in refrigerated display. The issue may not be the sheet’s original haze but moisture collecting on the formed surface.

For that reason, anti-fog performance should be assessed under representative storage and temperature-change conditions. A flat-sheet visual inspection alone cannot establish how well the finished container will remain visible.

Anti-fog treatment and heat-seal compatibility are separate functions. An anti-fog surface does not automatically provide sealing compatibility with a particular lidding film.

05 Sheet Quality for Consistent Thermoforming

Clear salad packaging exposes differences in sheet appearance quite easily. Haze, tint, surface marks and uneven forming can become visible across the container walls.

For the sheet supplier, these are manufacturing quality concerns. Thickness distribution and surface condition need to remain within the agreed specification so the converter can maintain predictable forming results.

For RPET, an approved visual sample is especially useful. It establishes the acceptable appearance before the material enters routine production.

06 Custom APET and RPET Sheet Roll Supply

The quotation should define the actual roll requirements, not simply list “clear PET sheet.” Thickness, width, color reference and winding format affect both purchasing and production planning.

From Approved Sample to Bulk Supply

For an existing production line, send the current sheet grade, thickness, width and roll format. A sample is helpful if appearance or forming behavior needs to match an established material.

For a new project, we can discuss an initial PET sheet specification based on forming depth, intended use and order requirements. Once the material is approved, the same specification becomes the reference for repeat supply.
